Cours d’iconographie

  • 31/08/2025 - 07/09/2025

Discover the sacred art of Byzantine iconography through the Cretan-Greek tradition.

In this course, students will learn:

  • the fundamentals of egg tempera painting,
  • traditional gold leaf application
  • and spiritual symbolismfollowing the stylistic influences of iconographer Archdeacon AndrĂ© Pawliw.

No prior experience is needed — whether you're a beginner or someone seeking a deeper connection to Eastern Christian art, this course is designed to be both accessible and enriching.

To enter into the mystical world of Greek-Byzantine spirituality through the sacred craft of icon painting, we will begin with a simple yet profound composition: the bust of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary), inspired by the work attributed to Emmanuel Lambardos (1587–1631), a master of the Cretan School.

Most materials — including pigments, paintbrushes, gold leaf, and icon boards — will be provided. Students are kindly asked to bring drawing paper, pencils, and a ruler. If you own high-quality sable or petit-gris (squirrel hair) fine-point round brushes — such as the Raphaël Kolinsky 8351 or 8404 series used for watercolor — feel free to bring them along.

Join us and step into a sacred artistic tradition and bring an icon to life with your own hands!
